Sargent Beach

Sargent Beach runs along a stretch of Matagorda County coast that's been fighting erosion for decades, losing ground fast enough that the Army Corps of Engineers has a restoration project underway. The east end, reached via FM 457, stays open and is where most beach driving and surf fishing happens; sections further west have closed at times due to storm damage, so it's worth checking current conditions before heading out.
Locals who surf fish here know it well, but the ongoing erosion and periodic closures make it a call ahead kind of place rather than a dependable weekend spot.

There's no developed lot, just beach driving and parking directly on the sand near the end of FM 457, free of charge.
Access is by driving straight onto the sand, no paved path or facilities of any kind.
Dogs are allowed off leash.
Erosion and storm damage make this stretch more sensitive to weather than most, so fall and winter after hurricane season, which runs June through November, tend to be the calmer, more predictable months to visit.
