Shired Island sits inside the Lower Suwannee River National Wildlife Refuge, a quiet county park with a small beach, a short fishing pier, and a campground that draws far more anglers and campers than beachgoers. It's about as far off the beaten path as Florida's Gulf Coast gets, six miles down a county road from Horseshoe Beach itself.
The genuine isolation and refuge setting appeal to anglers and campers looking to get away from it all, though the shallow, calm beach and inconsistent camping availability keep it from being a real swim destination.
How we score beachesCheck on current camping availability before planning an overnight stay, storm damage has intermittently closed the campground in recent years. The beach here is shallow and calm, better suited to wading than serious swimming, so set expectations accordingly.
Parking is free at the park. Camping runs 10 dollars a night for a tent or 20 dollars for an RV with electric hookup, cash only, collected by a county employee.
The beach is a short, flat walk from the campground area. Ground is natural and can be uneven near the shoreline.
Pet policies here are inconsistently documented and may vary; check with Dixie County directly before assuming dogs are welcome.
Cooler months bring the most comfortable camping and fishing conditions on this exposed stretch of coast. Summer's heat and hurricane season, June through November, are real considerations this far from services.
