Sylvan Beach Park
La Porte, TX

Sylvan Beach Park sits on Galveston Bay in La Porte, Harris County's answer to the crowded beaches further down the coast. Two stretches of fine white sand line the park, with smaller, calmer waves than the Gulf beaches and none of the seaweed that piles up elsewhere, which is what keeps locals coming back instead of driving the extra hour to Galveston.
A genuinely pleasant bay beach that saves Houston area locals the drive to Galveston, though it's a bay swim, not a surf beach, and won't satisfy anyone chasing waves.
How we score beachesCombine a beach trip with the skate park and fishing pier on site. The park runs about 31 acres and is built for a full afternoon, not just a quick swim.
Parking is free and ample throughout the park, open from 7am to 10pm daily.
Flat, paved paths run through the park to the sand, with restrooms, a playground, and picnic pavilions on site.
Leashed dogs are allowed.
Bay water warms into the mid to upper 70s by summer, milder than the open Gulf, with hurricane season running June through November worth watching given the park's low lying bayfront location.
